Gas BBQ: a permanent natural gas line or a propane tank?

A natural gas line to your BBQ means no more tank refills — but it has to be run and connected properly.

Running a natural gas line to an outdoor BBQ means you never swap or refill a propane tank again, and natural gas is usually cheaper per BTU than propane. For people who grill often, it's a genuine convenience upgrade.

The catch is that it's real gas work. The line has to be properly sized for the run and the BTU load, run with approved materials, protected where it passes through or under the house, and terminated outside with a proper shutoff and a certified quick-connect. Outdoor gas lines also have to account for freezing, corrosion, and clearance — a garden-hose-style hookup isn't acceptable.

So the choice isn't really 'line vs. tank' — it's 'do I want the convenience of a permanent line, and am I willing to have it done properly.' If the answer is yes, a natural gas BBQ line is a great upgrade. It just has to be installed by a certified gas technician and tested before it's put into use.
