What does gas technician certification actually mean?

Gas work is regulated in Ontario for a reason. Here's what certification is — and why it matters when someone works on your gas equipment.

In Ontario, gas work is regulated. Technicians are certified by level, and the level determines what kind of gas equipment they're qualified to install, activate, and service. A G2 gas technician is certified to work on residential and light commercial gas equipment — furnaces, water heaters, fireplaces, stoves, and the piping and venting that connect them.

The certification means the person has been trained and tested on gas piping, venting, combustion, pressure testing, and the safety procedures that go with fuel-burning equipment. It's not a formality. Gas appliances involve real risks — gas leaks, carbon monoxide, and improper venting — and the training exists because those risks are serious when the work is done badly.

When someone works on your gas equipment, asking whether they're certified isn't a confrontational question. It's the same standard you'd want for the electrical panel or the gas line itself. Done properly, gas work is safe. Done improperly, it's not.
