What is static pressure?

It's the single most overlooked number in residential HVAC. Here's what it means.

Static pressure is the resistance your blower works against as it pushes air through the ducts. Think of it like blood pressure for your HVAC system — too high or too low and the system isn't healthy, even if it's technically running.

High static pressure usually means air is being restricted somewhere: a clogged filter, closed registers, undersized ducts, or a coil that's dirty. The blower works harder, airflow drops, and comfort suffers.

Measuring static pressure is quick and tells you a lot. It's one of the first things worth checking before replacing equipment, because sometimes the equipment is fine and the ductwork is the problem.
