What is radon?
An invisible, naturally occurring radioactive gas that can enter buildings from the ground. Here's the plain version.
Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that comes from the breakdown of uranium in soil and rock. It's colourless and odourless, and it can move up through the ground and into buildings through cracks, gaps, and openings in the foundation.
Because you can't see or smell it, the only way to know whether radon is present at a level worth addressing is to measure. Levels vary from house to house, and even from one side of a street to another.
This isn't a reason to panic. It's a reason to test. Measurement is straightforward, and if a level is elevated, mitigation systems are well established and effective.
